English Dub Review: The Misfit of Demon King Academy “Goddess of Selection”

Overview (Spoilers Below):
To investigate the dragon sighted in Azeshion, Anos and his friends visit the Hero Academy in the name of participating in an exchange program.  Emilia teaches at the Hero Academy, but despite her efforts, Ledriano and the other students of the Hero Academy are rather unenthusiastic about the exchange.  Furthermore, Zamira, the headmaster of the Hero Academy, issues a decree to slay the dragon.  Yet, as Emilia resists his unreasonable order, the Hero Academy students begin to lose interest…

Our Take:
Anos had successfully foiled a villainous plot by destroying the poorly-made CGI dragon.  But, more problems have already emerged, mainly from the Hero Academy.  To preserve the peace between the two academies, Anos and the others visit the Hero Academy for the exchange program, where Emilia works as an instructor.  At the end of the previous episode, Anos promoted the former pureblood royal to the role of teacher at the Hero Academy.  Now, we get to see her teachings in action or lack thereof, as her students already despise her presence despite her standing up for them against the academy’s selfish headmaster, Zamira.  This episode further showcases Emilia’s struggles of being a half-demon amid the discrimination, which I’d hoped to see more of since the first half of the season.  The sequences involving her and Zamira and Anos’s conversation with Emilia are solid approaches to expanding Emilia’s character arc.
Following the brief incident at the Hero Academy, the episode shifts its focus to some light-hearted filler, with Anos and the gang enjoying their time at the lake, complete with their “Ultimate Swimsuits” and another confrontation between Lay and Shin.  This section doesn’t necessarily serve a purpose in its plot other than providing some comical moments before the season’s plot unfolds further.  Fortunately for me, a couple of those humorous moments work, especially the swimming competition between Lay and Shin, which Misa ignores.  It’s a relaxing breather that is interrupted by the appearance of the Goddess of Selection, who informs Anos that the Selection Gods are choosing him via the Judgement Selection.  So, it looks like we’ll be dealing with gods in the season’s second half.  Hopefully, it won’t leave me scratching my head from remembering everything from this part of the show’s lore.
