English Dub Review: The Witch and the Beast “The Witch and the Demon Sword”

Overview

Guideau and Ashaf look into a series of murders where all the victims have been stabbed relentlessly. They encounter Helga, a weak witch who somehow manages to hold a great power…

I was worried about The Witch and Beast’s routine starting to wear thin, but this episode was a fun enough romp to hold back my concerns– just for a little bit. I really did miss Guideau’s no nonsense attitude contrasting with Ashaf’s attempts of suaveness. I especially appreciated Guideau simplifying the rampant amount of exposition this episode as well. Which I feel is starting to be more of a problem because of the show’s format. So far, each arc feels like they exist independently of each other. I’m sure the world-building set up in those arcs will come into play later, but for now they feel interchangeable. Which is hurting my investment in the show. Especially since we spend so much time being assaulted with exposition– and it feels like such a waste, because come next arc, it wont come into play. At least that’s what I think so far. I would love to be wrong!

Our “Witch of the Week” Helga left a fun enough impression. I’m always a sucker for seemingly weak characters not being aware of their full strength, in this case; Helga casually wielding the demon sword. She’s got a decent amount of attitude too, would love to see her and Guideau bicker for 24 minutes.

As per usual, the “Opening Act” is the set up and our “Final Act” will be our pay off. We learn alot this episode: Paladins, witch lineage, and the aforementioned demon sword– but I feel so numb to it knowing that the next arc will throw it all away for something else. But for now, I’ll focus on the arc we’re in right now. Let’s see what next week holds.
