English Dub Review: Hokkaido Gals Are Super Adorable! “Lake Abashiri Is Super Relaxing”

Overview:

Matsuo, a class friend who made amends with Minami, takes Tsubasa smelt fishing as a thank you for his consultation. Minami, who happened to be at the fishing spot, joins them, and they discuss makeup. Later, Minami visits Tsubasa who’s caught a cold.

Our Take:

It’s time for White Day and Matsuo wants to make up for how mean he was to Minami on Valentine’s Day. He would also like to make sure Sayuri doesn’t want to kill him after what happened, so with Tsubasa’s help, he gets back on their good side even though Minami has long since forgiven him. With all that taken care of Matsuo invites Tsubasa out for smelt fishing to thank him for his help. Smelt fishing can be done on the ice, and thanks to a lucky coincidence, Minami was there with her family as well. But as you know in the world of anime, spending too much time in the cold leads to getting sick.

Is it just me or does this show and The Foolish Angel Dances with the Devil have some of the same themes every week? I understand that getting sick and having the sick visit happens in anime but these two seem to have them in the same week. But this one was fantastic because I think it led to Minami realizing how much she cares for Tsubasa and I think he had a similar realization. Shows like this often take a long time for characters to make any romantic progress but I’m hopeful that won’t happen even if Sayuri is best girl.
