English Dub Review: Blue Exorcist “The World’s Astir”

OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)

Rin Okamura, the illegitimate spawn of Satan, continues his adventures at True Cross Academy as he helps a classmate deal with seeing demons he can’t fight, then assists his classmates in conquering a haunted painting at the request of his school’s chairman, Mephisto, who is also the son of Satan. But unknown to him, a new threat is on the horizon.

OUR TAKE

A cursory wiki search seems to indicate that this episode and the next few following it will be greatly condensing a more light hearted arc so they can get all of that out of the way and move on to the one in the title. Considering this is the first new (non-OVA) episode they’ve had since end of March 2017, we’re basically given a refresher course on the premise, tone, and character dynamics that the show already had. Rin is the son of the devil but lives with his brother who’s his superior, he’s training to be an Exorcist alongside several Exorcist friends, and his school is run by Mephistopheles, who…he apparently is only learning NOW is also a demon. Again, it’s been a WHILE since I last watched any of this show, but I kinda thought that was, if not out in the open, at least known to Rin, but I guess not. Then we have the “Family Portrait” challenge that Mephisto drops on him and his friends, which gives us a chance to be reminded of how well they all work together, and also what the heck their powers are. Next week may be more fun and games before the main course begins.
