English Dub Review: The Weakest Tamer Began a Journey to Pick Up Trash “Towards an Unexpected Situation”

OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)

Ivy feeds Sora more potions, reports a possible monster attack, and does math to see how much trash she can sell.

OUR TAKE

It has been clear from the start that this show intends to lean on the more low energy and comforting tone. Even with our main character on the run from murderous villagers, they’ve taken the time to slow down and enjoy the scenery. And that’s all fine and good, even appreciated! Most Isekai shows are so focused on checking off boxes that they usually don’t try to look for new or lesser appreciated angles. And YET…this episode nearly bored me to sleep both times I watched it. The main reason being that nothing of real importance really happens. Well, aside from Ivy telling some likely important lore to Sora as a bedtime story. As speculated, we’ll probably be getting some clearer look at how Ivy’s power are not actually super weak, but in fact secretly THE MOST POWERFUL after she tames some really strong creatures and/or Sora turns out to be insanely powerful itself after it absorbs enough potions. Rest assured, there are most definitely some bigger things happening in this story that will bear fruit down the line and hopefully be executed well even if they are kind of predictable. Maybe that’s just what happens when you have seen so many of these things.

The rest of the episode, however, was DISTURBINGLY dull. As in, it was a legitimate struggle to hold my attention during the episode’s duration. Ivy feeding Sora potions is something we have already seen at length already, so seeing more of it is basically just belaboring the point of that. Oh, well, actually now Sora can drink RED potions in addition to blue ones, which doesn’t really seem to add anything of note to his abilities. Maybe he’ll be able to heal fire damage? Or maybe he’d be able to shoot fire HIMSELF or evolve to a different form? I guess neither of those. Reporting the monster attack is also surprisingly not very interesting, as they show seems to focus more on just highlighting the odd bureaucracy this world has about reporting monster attacks. And lastly there’s Ivy trying to do some money math to calculate which stuff she finds can be sold for some money, which is just utterly riveting, isn’t it? It’s just boring me to tears over here. Hopefully the next episode will get us back on track, but I do hope that anything that happens with this show in particular does not dissuade anyone from taking big swings with their next creative project.
