English Dub Review: The Apothecary Diaries “Lakan”

Overview:

At home, Maomao visits an annex building at the Verdigris House that hides one of the brothel’s secrets. Lakan continues to antagonize Jinshi as his connection to Maomao becomes clear.

Our Take:

There’s a lot to unpack with this one, and it was uncomfortable. We don’t know why Jinshi asked Maomao the question he did, and I hope we get to find out but what we did find out was quite interesting. In the first part, I am going to just be theorizing or perhaps it was mentioned and I didn’t catch it but I believe that Maomao’s mother was a concubine. Which is why I think she was so upset when Jinshi asked about the best way to lower a concubine’s value.

The weird guy that has been bothering everyone lately with the monocle now has a name. It’s Lakan, which is not how I thought that was going to be spelled. But one thing we learned was that he is more than likely Maomao’s birth father, and based on her reaction to meeting him she might already know. I thought it was pretty awesome of Jinshi to tell Maomao that he wouldn’t make her meet him if she didn’t want to.
