English Dub Review: Solo Leveling “I’ve Gotta Get Stronger”

Overview:

Jinwoo battles monsters in a dungeon to increase his strength.

Our Take:

Jinwoo continues his quest to get stronger by battling a myriad of monsters in a dungeon. He manages to clear it in time to assist other hunters in a big battle back on the surface. Jinwoo’s strength is significantly higher now than it was at the beginning of the series. It’s only a matter of time before other hunters start to realize that.

The action and voice acting in this episode is incredible. I’ve praised the show for both of these things before, but that just shows how well it excels in these aspects. Jinwoo’s fight against the dungeon boss is the highlight of the episode without a doubt. It looks great and Aleks Le’s performance as Jinwoo continues to be great.

We see Joohee returning to the field and this episode, which is interesting. It’s obvious what the trauma from that last raid has done to her and it greatly affects her ability to perform. Jinwoo says he’s still feeling the effects of the raid, but he’s having the complete opposite response. He’s using it as motivation to get stronger, whereas Joohee can’t concentrate on healing her comrades anymore.

I’m still enjoying Solo Leveling, but I have a concern with the direction it’s going in. The reason is that Jinwoo is now in that overpowered main character category. He’s not boring, so that’s a plus at least. However, what made the second episode so great in my opinion was the suspense. Now that Jinwoo is so strong, there really isn’t much suspense in these fights anymore. It’s possible that this won’t always be the case moving forward, so I’m trying to keep an open mind. Otherwise, this show is still enjoyable and I’m still looking forward to what comes next.
