English Dub Season Review: Shy Season One

Overview:

As a young, timid girl, Shy is a fairly new hero with a lot to learn. She struggles with self-confidence and questions if she is worthy of the hero title. Even though she is unsure of herself, Shy works hard to save people and do the right thing. As new, powerful threats reveal themselves, Shy must cooperate with heroes around the world all while learning what it means to be a hero.

Our Take:

When I first started watching this series it got me thinking that when it comes to anime, there are only a couple that deal with superheroes. I’m sure there’s more but as far as good and popular ones I can think of two others besides this. You have My Hero Academia, and One Punch Man and they both tell pretty different stories but yet both manage to make being a superhero an actual profession.

The superheroes of Shy aren’t doing it for a paycheck but are instead chosen to serve. One of these heroes is the titular Shy and you guessed it she’s pretty shy. While I wouldn’t say she ever completely gets over being shy, she at least learns to embrace it and find the fire within herself (literally) to fight.

Shy is voiced by Veronica Laux and I would say this is her first big role. I’m noticing that they are starting to use a lot of different talents when it comes to the voice-acting side of things, Veronica did great at portraying how well… shy that Shy is but she also did a great job of voicing her resolve at tough moments.

This series had a slow start but the last arc was really impactful for me. The character of Spirit seemed like an annoying trope at first but the final arc really focused on her and the season ended with her as my favorite character.

There is already a second season confirmed for Shy and I can’t wait. This is a fun anime especially if you want a little bit of a different take on superheroes. All the arcs that get started have satisfying conclusions so you won’t feel let down either.
