English Dub Review: The Apothecary Diaries “Honey”

Overview:

A tea party hosted by Lady Gyokuyou puts the politics of the rear palace at the forefront, and Maomao learns something new about Lady Lishu. His true intentions are unclear, Jinshi sends Maomao to work for Lady Ah-Duo.

Our Take:

There are so many concubines that I sometimes get a bit confused about who is who. But I remember that Lishu was the one that Maomao was doing her best to protect when it came to tasting for poison and things like that. Lishu had some allergies that very well might have killed her if Maomao hadn’t stepped in and done something about her taster. Luckily, Lishu’s taster remembered the lesson from that day but something still isn’t right about Lishu.

Lishu is only fourteen years old and therefore she is pretty naive to how the world works. With this in mind, she puts more trust into her ladies in waiting, but what if they don’t have her best interests in mind? They do little things that we would construe today as bullying even if it’s indirectly. Maomao only wants to help Lishu but her ladies don’t want to give Maomao the time of day. Hopefully, Maomao can get through to Lishu before something really bad happens.
