English Dub Review: MF Ghost “The Genius Awakens”

Overview

Qualifying begins for the second race of the season, which is set to take place at Lake Ashinoko. With Kanata set to do his run on a later day, other drivers get their moment to shine.

Our Take

This time around, Kanata is about to meet his match in the form of a Kouki Sawatari who drives a Blue Alpine, who previously wasn’t part of the opening race Kanata was part of due to Kouki dating his teen girlfriend which is all kinds of creepy. Especially since he has a disturbing thing for 17-year-olds and openly brags about it. And much like Leonardo DiCaprio, dumps them when they reach beyond a specific age range.

But despite the weirdness of this jackass who has declared himself Kanata’s rival, the other drivers can’t deny Sawatari’s talent. And the mere presence of Kanata has motivated him to go all out for once since due to past circumstances, he wasn’t able to take Kanata on in a previous race in another country because of shitty circumstances he had at the time, but now he has a car of high-performance to be a match against him. As for Kanata himself, he seems content with the upgrades from the previous episode and is thankfully catching on in his new job.

Overall, while the proceedings were good in raising the stakes and giving Kanata a rival, It doesn’t help how normalized this kinda is in Japan. I know I previously talked about this weeks ago, but I can’t be the only one who’s been irked by this. But with one more episode left of the season, I’m compelled to see how this race will go.
