English Dub Review: Undead Unluck “How to Use My Unluck”
OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)
Andy and Fuuko make their way to Russia in order to kill the Union member they were told about, but are attacked by fighter jets on the way, which Andy takes care of by making use of Fuuko’s Unluck ability, much to her chagrin. Once there, Andy leaves Fuuko alone to get resources, where she meets a painter named Gina who she bonds with for a little bit. However, once Andy makes it back, she reveals she is the one who imprisoned and experimented on him 50 years ago.
OUR TAKE
As we settle into the usual dynamic between our undying duo, we begin to see the fruits of Andy’s labors in working on Fuuko. We already know full well what his intentions are with her, namely getting her to fully fall for him so that he can get as close as possible to death (adding a rather tragic shadow to hang over their adventures as they grow closer), but it’s here we see him getting her to shift her view of her abilities. For most of her life, her power has been a curse bringing uncontrollable harm to those she loves and making her feel powerless and alone. Now, however, she gets to see that aspects of the power can be tweaked to cause more predictable reactions, making things feel more tangible. In time, she could better learn the ins and outs of what actions cause what types of reactions and bad luck, effectively turning her bad luck into good luck, at least for her. Kind of a shame that this training can’t occur without Andy assaulting her, but hopefully there’s a chance that will shift over time. In the meantime, this character development may just have to have this ickiness attached which we’re just gonna have to overlook.
The other thing to talk about is the introduction of yet another Union member, Gina, who just so happens to be on Andy’s shit list for decades of experimentation. Based on the brief flashbacks we get, this bad blood wasn’t always the case, but things clearly soured after a certain point. Gina mentions liking things that stay the same forever, hinting at why she likes Andy, the guy who always reverts back to a familiar shape regardless of injury, as well as why she may look the same after so long. What she likely can’t accept for one reason or another is the fact that change is the only constant, which will likely contribute to her downfall. Whether fortunately or unfortunately, it looks like she will be the next casualty, as she does not look like she’s in any of the promotional art of Andy and Fuuko standing with the members of the Union, but we’ll have to wait until next week’s episode to see how all that plays out. And like all things, the year is gonna be changing very soon, so see you back here in 2024 to check back in with the undead and unlucky.
"There are also other characters that come and go (also owned by the Warner Bros. Discovery conglomerate media company)."
Huh. Is that just referring to other characters from the show itself, or is this implying that the new season is going to have cameos from other WBD IPs
