English Dub Review: The Apothecary Diaries “Suicide or Murder?”

Overview:

An older acquaintance of Jinshi’s dies while drinking at a party. A servant’s body turns up in a moat. Both deaths are written off as self-inflicted, but Maomao’s keen observations tell her that there’s more to both stories.

Our Take:

If you’ve read many of my reviews before you would know that I’m a sucker for smart characters. I love it when problems aren’t always solved with muscles and physicality. Sherlock Holmes is one of my favorite fictional characters for this reason and sometimes in the world of anime, it feels like characters like that are hard to find.

Maomao is one of these characters as well and between her and Jinshi this mystery is as good as solved. The only negative thing I have to say about this series is that as far as the romance goes there has been next to none. Not with the main characters at least, the closest we got was Jinshi misunderstanding what Maomao said last episode and thinking she slept with the guy who helped her return home. So it’s clear to most that he has some sort of affection for her at the very least but it seems that she might be the dense one in this pair because she can’t seem to place why he’s been acting weird.
