English Dub Review: The Ancient Magus’ Bride “Man’s extremity is God’s opportunity.” “Even a worm will turn.”

Overview:

Philomela bargains for Liza to undo the seal over the College so she can return home to fulfill her duty. As Chise gives chase, her power gives her a terrifying new form.

Alycone reflects on Philomela’s childhood and her all-important task. An ancient and fearsome goddess blocks Chise’s path on the way to the Sargant family home and demands tribute that was promised a year ago.

Our Take:

You know how they say “be careful what you wish for?” well that definitely came to fruition in the second episode. Once again I feel like the second episode released today left a bigger mark on me than the previous one but I’ve also been wanting to see about Philomela’s childhood really bad. Remember a couple of episodes ago when Alycone had the automated message from Philomela’s grandmother that played? Well now that I saw this episode it’s even more fucked up.

I was under the impression that Alycone was something (someone?) that her grandmother put in charge of keeping an eye on Philomela. In the second episode here we learn that it was actually her father who made Alycone and she was in charge of helping them raise Philomela, her parent’s just wanted to get away from the family and as we’ve come to learn it’s for a good reason.

Philomela’s family is in the running for one of the worst in anime and that is saying something but I am hoping that Philomela at least will get a good ending, but this was a fantastic two episode return for the series. This isn’t quite the cozy laid back series I was enjoying at first but it’s still very good and I’m looking forward to the next episode.
