English Dub Review: My Hero Academia OVA “U.A. Heroes Battle”

Overview:

With UA in lockdown right around the holidays, everyone is bummed that they can’t do their usual Christmas and New Year traditions. Luckily, they get given a fun and advanced new card game where they can pit pro heroes and themselves against each other.

Our Take:

I’ve found that My Hero Academia tends to do a lot better than most anime when it comes to OVAs. Usually, they aren’t canon and I’m not saying they are here but in this, it’s something that happens as a part of their daily school or home life. Whether it be a training exercise or passing time in the dorm room, it can still be fun.

I enjoyed this episode because it poked fun at anime with everyone’s card counterpart having huge eyes. Not only that but when done right a card game anime can be enjoyable, and this was done right.

When a player puts down a character card a virtual counterpart of that card is placed on the simulated battle board. Trust me when I say if card games were like this in real life I would play a lot more card games.

This OVA does exactly what it should in giving us fun with the characters we love and nothing too crazy beyond that. Do you need to watch it? No, it’s just some fun to be had while we wait for season seven. Should you watch it? I think so, especially if you’re a fan of the series because almost all of the 1-A crew gets some screen time and you won’t be disappointed.
