English Dub Review: MF Ghost, “Updates”

Overview

Kanata managed to haul the 86 up to unexpected heights at Odawara Pikes Peak, but the next race is on a course that is a lot flatter with fewer downhill sections where he can make up for his car’s lack of power, so it’s time to tune his ride!

Our Take

After the Odawara Pikes Peak race, Kanata gets a bit of a break, though Ren forgets that she’s living with him now. Even on a Saturday, Ren has to go to school and attend supplementary classes for the ones she missed at her MFG Angels job, though the same can be said about Kanata hiding his real identity as a racer which is revealed eventually despite Kanata not knowing shit about Ren’s job…

But just when you think Ren would be honest with the dude, bad timing happens when Ogata cones to to seek Kanata with the offer to upgrade his Toyota 86,which is quite long overdue. Shun’s recommended engineer of Team Spiral Zero’s Hiroku Okuyama (the one with the S15) advising both Kanata and Ogata about improving the 86 with some much needed “Upgrades”.

Overall, this was a nice relaxing episode, After the intense racing action of the last few of episodes, nice to get a slower-paced episode with Ren and Kanata just chilling. I hope Ren at some point works up the courage to tell him how she feels soon, or least tell the truth. Even if they don’t get together right away, having it off her chest will do wonders. I also like Kanata’s approach to just wanting a normal life. I think when you turn your passions into a job they become less fun anyway. Working a regular job and keeping racing as a side-hustle seems like a proper balance for him, as his mom raised him well and taught him to appreciate the small things in life. On the racing side of things, the 86’s upgrades might be minor, but I’m sure they’ll have a big impact. But with two more episodes left, I’m curious where this goes next!
