English Dub Review: Spy X Family “Plan to Cross the Border”
OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)
Anya gets her and Loid tickets to go on a cruise!…a cruise that Yor will also be on to protect a client from assassination.
OUR TAKE
Finally, after four weeks of incidental and disposable comedic side stories, we are truly getting into some proper story for this season. We’ve already used up a third of the allotted episodes but hey, better late than never, I guess. So, not only do we get a look at the organization that Yor works for, including its boss who has apparently previously been in the shadows, we have see Yor get a mission that focuses on her protecting a mother and her child who also have to make a fake family for the sake of the mission. Parallels, parallels, parallels galore! I mean, it’s more that it’s JUST this mother and her biological son who need a fake dad they are basically emotionally unattached to in order to get into hiding, unlike with Yor and her situation, but the differences make for some interesting notes on their own. Yor isn’t in hiding, her family gets to be out in the open, and she could probably fight off any attackers herself if she needed to, but it clearly does bring to mind the idea of wishing that they were a proper enemy without needing to maintain this cover. She also wonders if this will be her last mission (fat chance of that) and what that will mean for her.
Beyond that, this is very clearly a plot relevant step forward that we’ve been waiting for. I enjoyed the past four episodes well enough, and them being one-offs and about minor characters did at least help to set a baseline, but it’s nice to see the story progress, considering I still haven’t seen the first season. I honestly probably should if I plan to see that movie down the line. We’ve got the stuff with Yor that I mentioned before (accidental rhyme!), but also a check in with Yuri that helps her consider if she needs to be an agent anymore, as well as some fun times with Loid and Anya that facilitate the plot happening at all. I have to imagine that, once they all confirm that they are a real family even if it did start as a mission, they’ll probably be on the run from their respective situations and Yor will probably get some pointers on how to make it through that from this whole story arc. But to find that out, we’ll have to wait until next week! Seems pretty likely though, right?
"There are also other characters that come and go (also owned by the Warner Bros. Discovery conglomerate media company)."
Huh. Is that just referring to other characters from the show itself, or is this implying that the new season is going to have cameos from other WBD IPs
