English Dub Review: Rent-a-Girlfriend “Girlfriend and Boyfriend”

Overview:

Kazuya decides to rent Chizuru out for an entire day and puts together a date plan to help cheer her up. Will he be successful?

Our Take:

I want to be clear, I hate the whole “simp” thing but this might as well be called “Simp: The Anime” because Kazuya is the epitome of that. It doesn’t even have anything to do with the fact that he rents Chizuru (though that doesn’t help) and more to do with his reactions to basic interaction between a man and a woman. This boy has seen her in a swimming suit before but yet somehow he freaks out and loses his mind when she wears a skirt. If you read any of my reviews you’ll know that interesting and deep characters are one of the most important aspects to a series for me. The characters here are about as deep as the kiddie pool unfortunately.

That’s not to say there aren’t any redeeming qualities to Kazuya though. He did what he could to try and cheer up the woman he loves and that is admirable. The way he acted near the end of the date was the least dumb I’ve seen him in a while but now we have to see how he handles Chizuru now that she seems to be breaking down and at her most vulnerable. Losing a loved one is one of the most difficult things someone can go through and he will need to step up to be the right guy.
