English Dub Review: Reign of the Seven Spellblades “Last Song”

Overview:

Ophelia’s plan reaches its climax, trapping Oliver and his friends inside another world where she rules.

Our Take:

I’ve never been more sad to be wrong. I was hoping this was going to get two cours of episodes but instead, we just got a little longer first cour. Hopefully, it does well enough that we might get another season but on the bright side at least we have the light novels to read.

This was actually a pretty sad episode and they managed to make me feel sorry for Ophelia. Not only that but I got to find out what is going on with Carlos and how he can resist Ophelia’s perfume. Perhaps they said something earlier and I just didn’t catch it but he’s apparently a “Castrato”. This means he was magically neutered, which was a little weird to hear discussed. Never thought I would hear an anime character say “his gonads were removed” but this whole arc has been weird with all the discussion of wombs and sex magic.

It was an interesting arc but maybe not the best one to end on with all the other plot threads left dangling. Oliver has a lot of revenge to enact and it doesn’t seem like we’ll get to see that and I really want to see more interactions with him and Nanao. But perhaps that will come in a second season, if anime has taught me anything it’s that I should never give up hope.
