English Dub Review: MF Ghost, “The Shocking New MFG Generation”
Overview
Kanata begins his qualifying run around the 40-kilometer-long Odawara Pikes Peak, aiming to set a quick time. But with a seriously underpowered car compared to his rivals, how high up the leaderboard can he get?
Our Take
This time around, Kanata gives a try on Odawara Pikes Peak with Ogata’s Toyota 86, which he’s gaining an AI attention flag thanks to Ogata’s car, despite it being weaker than the other European models. As a fact, the entire MFG event was concocted by Ryosuke Takahashi, founder of the Akagi RedSuns and Project D (a minor callback to another Initial D series called “3rd Stage”), knowing that Kanata was Takumi Fujiwara’s student before.
Kanata while making an effort falls behind a bit in the course, but manages to accurately pinpointed the course’s ins and outs, which Shun doubts that Kanata will make it out alive. Especially in Sector 3, the course’s death zone, While this is going on, we learn that Ren not only knows what Kanata does for a living, but is doing it for the thrill of racing. It’s so deadly that even veterans will play safe, but Kanata’s built differently as Ogata and Shun watch in nervousness. But the real question is, how will he navigate the rest of the course?
Overall, this was an ok episode. Maybe I should finally watch Initial D at some point… Aside from that, the episode had a series of plot twists that part of me saw coming a mile away such as Ren finding out that Kanata’s a racer within her workplace yet he doesn’t recognize her which is understandable since he has to focus on the road. I had to research why some of these other character names I never heard of were significant, but it’s clear that some level of care and attention was put into the shout-outs and references to past Initial D storylines, most notably the soundtrack using the band “Eurobeat” who were known for their Iconic pieces of music within the franchise. Hopefully, Episode 3 somehow tops this in some way.
"There are also other characters that come and go (also owned by the Warner Bros. Discovery conglomerate media company)."
Huh. Is that just referring to other characters from the show itself, or is this implying that the new season is going to have cameos from other WBD IPs
