English Dub Review: My Happy Marriage “Summer Cherry Blossoms, and the Mistake”

Overview (Spoilers Below):

Arata reveals his true identity and introduces Miyo to the grandfather she never knew. They claim they can cure her nightmares—on one condition.

Our Take:

Miyo and Kiyoka’s relationship has taken a turn for the worse, with Miyo’s nightmares continuing to haunt the depressed woman. Not only that, but Kiyoka has discovered more shocking secrets about his future wife and the Usuba family. One of those secrets is that Sumi has the same surname as Arata Tsuruki, whom Kiyoka is taking Miyo to see for her condition. Unfortunately, those hits keep coming in this week’s episode, as it’s revealed upon their arrival that Arata is the son of the head of the Usubas, making him and Miyo cousins. Additionally, Miyo has a grandfather named Yoshiro Usuba, the head of the family. So, it’s basically a family reunion for the entire Usuba clan that took a heartbreaking turn.

Aside from these family secrets, the episode revealed that Miyo’s nightmares are caused by a rare Usuba gift she has all along. Her ability is “Dream Sight”, which allows her to enter someone’s dreams and manipulate them. Considering how powerful it seemed, it’s unsurprising that someone would want her by their side, including Arata and Yoshiro.

As a result, Arata and Kiyoka engage in a thrilling duel that determines who’s capable enough to protect Miyo. While it didn’t end well for Kiyoka due to Arata’s mist abilities, I would consider this sequence another highlight for the series. Granted, it resembles something out of an action fantasy series. However, it’s also another scenario that earns its stakes regarding Kiyoka’s conflict between his duty and protecting Miyo. Regarding its animation and heartbreaking end, My Happy Marriage still showcases that the action and drama can go hand-in-hand with its emotion.

If my assumption is correct, we’re nearly done with this incredible action-fantasy romance series. Unfortunately, things are still not looking bright for Miyo’s future regarding Kiyoka’s mission to defeat the Grotesqueries. The Grotesqueries may seem unnecessary at first, but after watching the episode, it became more evident as to why they were added to the season’s second half. At least it’s not as bad as living with her abusive stepmother and sister, right? But, of course, the only question remaining is how and why Miyo’s powers were sealed by her own mother. We’ll likely find out next week, as the next chapter looks to be a flashback episode involving Sumi’s past.
