English Dub Review: Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation “The White Mask”

Overview:

Investigating the mass teleportation leads Rudeus to seek out his most elusive classmate: the brilliant Silent Sevenstar. But when he calls at Silent’s laboratory tower, he finds a familiar face that he didn’t expect—and doesn’t welcome.

Our Take:

Typically I think it’s really annoying when a protagonist is extraordinarily dense but I think in this case it’s not that he’s dense but more that so much time has passed and Sylphie looks so different that it would be hard to tell it’s her. I’m with Luke and Ariel though in thinking it’s a bit weird that Sylph hasn’t said anything to Rudeus by now. After seeing him interact with “Silent Sevenstar” I think she might be more motivated.

There are a couple of interesting things involving Silent Sevenstar. For one she was with Orsted when he obliterated Rudeus but then decided to spare him. So, it’s understandable when Rudeus reacts the way he does when he sees her. That was some intense PTSD if I’ve ever seen it. What is probably more interesting is the fact that she is from Japan and was in fact the girl he jumped in front of Truck-kun to save.

This led to a pretty interesting interaction where the spoken language we could understand was actually Japanese while the language we had been listening to started sounding foreign for a bit. It was jarring at first but I got used to it pretty quick. Silent’s real name is Nanahoshi and she wasn’t reincarnated but summoned. The question is, who summoned her?
