English Dub Review: Bungo Stray Dogs “Land of Inhuman Demons (Part 3)”

Overview (Spoilers Below):

Dazai and Sigma are trapped in a flooding room. Atsushi is attacked by Akutagawa when he attempts to help Aya. During their fight, Aya desperately tries to remove the holy sword from Bram.

Our Take:

You probably know where this is going, folks. Just as our heroes are about to gain the upper hand, their formidable adversaries say, “screw you” and take it away. This has been that way since Fukuchi revealed his true colors, and this second-to-last episode of season five is no different. Unsurprisingly, it’s incredibly frustrating since Fukuchi has a time-traveling sword and a vampire army that put the Agency at an immediate disadvantage. The same goes for Fyodor and Chuuya, who trapped Dazai and Sigma in a flooding elevator. However, it also makes things highly enticing, which I haven’t experienced since the sixth season of My Hero Academia.

Following the beginning of last week’s episode, the final part of “Land of Inhuman Demons” showcased what happened to Aya and Bram after encountering the vampiric Akutagawa. It turns out that Akutagawa took them to the top of the airport to use them as bait for the agency members. Thankfully, Atsushi arrives in time to confront Akutagawa. Unfortunately for him, Atsushi’s fear of killing Akutagawa and desire to know why he saved him makes this battle more challenging than he expected. As a result, Atsushi wound up having his arm and leg ripped out in a bloody fashion.

Meanwhile, we see Aya attempting to pull the Holy Sword out of Bram, hoping it’ll end Bram’s vampire curse. Sadly, it’s not as easy as it sounds since the sword is stuck to him like glue. Even a falling table tied to the blade isn’t strong enough to get it out. Although, that didn’t stop me from crediting Aya for coming up with that plan.

However, that’s nothing compared to the fates of Dazai and Sigma. They managed to escape their doom, but that sadly doesn’t mean they got away unharmed. With the previous few characters biting the dust in the last few episodes, it makes sense that Dazai and Sigma receive this tragic treatment courtesy of Fyodor and Chuuya. While Sigma gets stabbed by Fyodor before getting information from him, Chuuya shoots Dazai in the head several times. This is a clear case that Fyodor and Chuuya have officially removed the competition for real because no one can survive a bullet to the head unless Dazai proves otherwise.

Regarding the stressful yet highly engaging events that unfold, this episode is equivalent to Infinity War, with Fukuchi achieving victory by unlocking the One Order and using it to destroy the world. This likely means that next week’s season finale will be the Endgame of the Agency’s most significant challenge in Bungo Stray Dogs. Better hang on to your trousers because next week is going to get nuts.
