After the emperor’s death, the Yamato Empire descends into chaos—it’s now ruled with an iron fist by a conniving general seeking to subjugate all before him. It’s up to a group of fugitives to rally all the kingdoms together and fight against the powerful Imperial army. Intriguing new lands will be discovered. Mysteries will be revealed. Will peace and order be restored? On the technical side, this anime adaptation of Utawarerumono: Mask of Truth was produced by White Fox, with Kenichi Kawamura directing, Itsuki Yokoyama writing the series’ scripts, Masahiko Nakata designing the characters and serving as chief animation director, and Aquaplus composing the music. The opening theme song is “Hito Nanda”, and the ending theme song is “Hyakunichisō”, both performed by Suara. For those that don’t know, this is the third season, of a 3 part series. And from what I researched, the first one came out in 2006 and takes place several years before this, about 18 years or so, and is on Funimation, you might be able to find it elsewhere. The second season is the first part of this and is on HiDive. It was once on here but they have taken it off. For the plot to make sense. Or if you don’t want to watch the other parts, there is another way to find out about the story and that is to play the games that are on said to be on the Playstation Vita (and also on Steam). They’re strategy novel games that are pretty good and tell the stories very well and I’ve been told are quite better than the anime’s as they can tell a little more story. Unfortunately, Crunchyroll doesn’t fully have the entire series, due to Funimation and Hidive being separate entities. Anyone starting this as if it’s a new stand-alone series will be missing out on so much lore, character development, and the events that lead up to the starting point of this season. Apart from everything going on in the middle which wasn’t bad but could’ve been set out alot better, it did do alot of things well like important plot pieces which involved supporting characters and the last climax of the chapter.

It also didn’t help that it that it shot itself in the foot with too much filler involving the war and politics, which consequently made the subplot that involved gathering allies at times stopped being important once they moved to the real plot with Woshis. And after the “satellite” story-arch near the end, it made much of the story feel unnecessary. But at the very least, it simply did well with whatever it was given and delivered as a Dub should in terms of quality.Overall, this was a solid way to end things, and the fact that so much effort was put into this series is a blessing, it wasn’t chopped apart into a 6-10 episode OVA, and it wasn’t rushed through into some 12 episodes but may require watching past episodes/seasons to connect the narrative dots. While it also had a large cast of fun, likable characters, and interesting world-building. and generally above-average production values. It might not have been a solid contender for the “anime of the year” title, but it’s easy to see why fans would get emotionally involved with this story (or its source material). But someday we can only hope that we might see all the seasons together at some point in the future…
