English Dub Review: The Duke of Death and His Maid “The Duke, Golf, and the Mysterious Beauty”

Overview:

Alice and the Duke play a game of mini-golf while receiving an unexpected visitor.

Our Take:

It’s not an anime until the main character’s brother gets dressed up like a girl and tries to seduce his brother into falling in love with him so his mother will see how poor the other brother is and choose him as the heir. When that fails he then decides he needs to be “cuter”, just a typical wealthy family I suppose.

We got some major backstory for Cuff and Zain which makes me feel bad for the guy and now I realize why he makes all those jokes. I’ve come to realize that most of the funniest people I’ve ever met have gone through some of the most traumatic things. Humor is a way to deflect some awful things and I respect Zain a lot more now. I wish he would hit on Alice less but now I understand why he’s so non-committal when it comes to Cuff’s feelings. He probably feels like he doesn’t deserve her because he wasn’t able to save their parents.

I’ve spent a lot of time talking about Zain and Cuff because when even the supporting characters have depth and matter to the story it adds a lot to a series. Daleth interrupts tea time for the Duke and asks him to get Zain to use his time magic for her. If he does that she might be able to help in breaking his curse. I’ve long hoped that the Duke getting his curse broke is just a blip on the story and there is something bigger that comes into play because I want to see the Duke and Alice together.
