English Dub Review: My Unique Skill Makes Me OP Even at Level 1 “Yay! It’s My Turn Now”

Overview (Spoilers Below):
A magic storm occurs, nullifying all magic and leaving magic-based adventurers powerless. But Ryota learns of one magic user who’s stuck in the dungeon, unable to fight, and volunteers to help her when no one else is willing to take the risk.

Our Take:
We all know that Ryota’s incredible strength can’t be matched by anything this world throws at him. However, this week’s episode shows that there’s one exception to this rule, or in this case, two. The first occurs after Ryota gains a speed increase from fighting a mummy, where he encounters Neptune, the leader of a well-known and powerful group whose power quickly matches Ryota’s OP skill. After Ryota wins an arm wrestling match with Neptune, Neptune offers him an invitation to join his gang, which Ryota quickly refuses in favor of living his days with Emily.
Hearing about Ryota refusing a generous offer for his friends further inspired Emily, who sees him as a hero like her mother. This episode was the first time we’ve heard of Emily having a mom whose kindness and courage inspired Emily to do the same for Ryota. In Emily’s flashback, we assume that her mother passed on after fighting a stray dragon, explaining why she lived alone until she met Ryota. While the emotional payoff for the flashback doesn’t hit the same level as Ryota’s skills, it’s a subtly heartfelt piece of character development showcasing Emily as more than just a pretty face with a giant hammer.
The flashback occurs while Emily and Eve set out to rescue Ryota, who volunteers to rescue Rosa from the Silicon dungeon before a magic storm hits the town. Not only does Ryota have to deal with the storm that makes magic users powerless, but he also has to fight the Silicon monsters that take zero damage. Luckily for Ryota, he has an arsenal of bullets to help him accomplish the mission, including the fire and healing bullets, which he uses to cure Rosa’s wounds.
The fifth episode has an interesting concept that could test Ryota’s OP skills in the form of a magic storm. Sadly, it doesn’t do much with it to provide a compelling struggle for the already powerful level-one player. Instead, it’s more of a race-against-the-clock scenario where Ryota rescues Rosa before the storm hits, and it’s pretty tame based on how easily he plows through the monsters with his bullets. On the bright side, Emily’s flashback involving her mother was heartwarming, which is enough to bypass the episode’s underwhelming concept.
