English Dub Review: My Happy Marriage “Drowning in Dreams”

Overview (Spoilers Below):
Though distressed by her nightmares, Miyo keeps pushing herself to be a supportive wife. Then, Arata Tsuruki comes to speak to her while Kiyoka is away.

Our Take:
Miyo’s training to be a proper lady is interrupted once again, but it’s not just by her mysterious nightmares. It’s also from the arrival of Arata Tsuruki, who saved her from collapsing in the previous episode. But that’s not the couple’s only problem in this week’s episode. The reason is that their love is tested once more by the crucial ingredient of every relationship: trust.
Following Miyo’s incident, she is told to rest from training until she’s back on her feet. Unfortunately, Miyo still strives to be a supportive wife and be by Kiyoka’s side no matter what. Of course, that includes attempting to support herself instead of using Kiyoka as her crutch. Considering that Kiyoka is always working due to the approaching Grotesqueries, it makes sense that Miyo wants to be strong enough to care for herself. However, it also results in her hiding her true feelings from Kiyoka, who’s juggling the Grotesqueries with the investigation of the Usuba family. By the way, the Usuba mystery thickens when it is discovered that Sumi Usuba is actually Sumi Tsuruki, meaning she’s related to Arata.
However, they don’t realize that their trust issues could be a part of Arata’s plan to tear the two apart. The sixth episode showcased the Emperor sending Arata to deal with Miyo and Kiyoka, and this episode has Arata convincing Miyo that Kiyoka has been neglecting her by working all day. He even advised them to visit him to work out their problems, which they later did after Miyo overworked herself again.
The episode offers plenty of moments that develop its characters further, including Hazuki, who regretted divorcing her husband after a fight. It also provides a compelling narrative involving Miyo and Kiyoka finding a connection through trust, mainly through their conversations. We might as well add that to the list of issues threatening to ruin this happy marriage.
