English Dub Review: Liar, Liar “Fighting Chance in Eyes of Blue”

Overview:

Akizuki forces Himeji to play a trial against Shinohara. This is a game that neither of them can afford to lose.

Our Take:

Himeji is Shinohara’s next opponent, so he needs Saionji’s and Kagaya’s help. Himeji tells Shinohara that she can’t lose. Unfortunately, losing certainly isn’t an option for Shinohara either. They all try to come up with a plan for Shinohara to win.

That plan is ultimately thrown out when Shinohara figures out what Himeji is doing. She’s not trying to win. She’s instead trying to throw off Akizuki, who insists on watching. Shinohara puts his trust in Himeji and the game ends in a draw. Unfortunately, this isn’t the end of Akizuki’s plan.

The game itself in this episode is pretty interesting. It’s a card game, which automatically piques my interest. I also like how Shinohara is quickly able to figure out Himeji’s plan. She tells him that she can’t lose, but that doesn’t mean she wants to in. The game ending in a draw is a great way to foil this stage of Akizuki’s plan.

We learn that Noa Akizuki can’t stand Shinohara. She says he cheated and lied to take the top spot. She’s technically not wrong, but it’s not like he had much of a choice. Regardless, Noa claimed that she worked hard to reach the top spot. I’m not sure if the show is trying to make her more sympathetic. if so, it was unsuccessful. She’s constantly using underhanded tactics and her cute act is really annoying. I still can’t stand her, especially after the stunt she pulls at the end of the episode.
