English Dub Review: Liar, Liar “Chocolate and the Devil”

Overview:

A fierce competition begins and Shinohara meets the “Little Devil.”

Our Take:

Himeji transfers into Shinohara’s class. In return, he has to retrieve the stolen green star. That entails winning the island’s big elimination competition. Kagaya and Himeji devise a strategy to assist Shinohara in this endeavor. It works out well at first, but it proves to be problematic.

Shinohara also meets a powerful six-star student named Noa Akizuki. She’s known as the “Little Devil” and it’s not hard to see why. She constantly tries to seduce Shinohara and manipulate him. She doesn’t get too far on that front, but she does end up getting a hold of someone close to him.

I like that we’re learning more about the different special stars. The red star was explained in the first episode, so it’s only natural that we learn about the other colored stars. The big competition is a cool idea too. I just wish they showed more of the action. We see challenged issued and games concluding in this episode, but not even a glimpse of the actual matches.

It’s nice to see Shinohara and Himeji getting along well. I like this pairing and they complement each other well. I’m looking forward to seeing their story develop more and I see potential for that in the next episode. It’s also nice to put a face to the name with Ami Kagaya. She’s one of the people who have been helping Shinohara win his games and we finally get to see what she looks like. She’s a fun character and I really hope to see more of her.

I can’t say the same for Noa Akizuki. She seems like the type of character you’re not supposed to like. If that’s the case, then mission accomplished. She’s annoying and I don’t care much for her trying to manipulate Shinohara. Plus, she says she completed her main goal in one scene. Shinohara asks her what the goal is and she says she’s just a ditzy girl, so she doesn’t know. That feels like it’s supposed to come off as mischievous, but it just sounds stupid to me. Honestly, this character reminds me of a bargain bin version of Kushida from Classroom of the Elite.
