English Dub Review: AYAKA: A Story of Bonds and Wounds “You Can Do It”

Overview:

Yukito has to choose who he wants to learn from.

Our Take:

Jingi and Yukito head to Third Island. There, they meet up with Yako, Chatarou, and Master Kurama. Kurama explains to Yukito what’s happening to Aka when he consumes ara-mitamas. He also explains to Jingi that he has to do a thorough job at being Yukito’s teacher.

Meanwhile, Yako and Chatarou teach Yukito a new spell that grows a tree. Yukito still doesn’t have full control over his powers, which makes the others suggest that he starts learning under Master Kurama instead.

I’m starting to see some growth in Yukito. At least he’s not closing himself off anymore and he’s actually trying to make new friends. Plus, he’s slowly starting to gain better control over his powers. He still needs help to do so, but it’s progress.

I’m glad some of the events from last episode are explained. I still have a lot of questions, but at least there are more details regarding Aka’s methods. This episode also tries to establish a stronger bond between Yukito and Jingi. Unfortunately, I feel like it falls flat. I just don’t feel the connection between these two, even just as teacher and student. The pairing seemed promising at first, but I think it needs to grow a lot more before it really impresses me.
