Review: My Adventures with Superman “My Interview with Superman”

OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)

Clark adjusts to balancing his time as both a reporter and new job as Superman, with Lois in hot pursuit of an interview. Three down on their luck criminals, led by Silver Banshee, start hitting major heists with the help of tech they snagged from Leslie Williams, but are soon stopped by Superman. Clark finally gives Lois the interview she was looking for as Superman, but learns later as Clark that she could tell he was lying about something.

OUR TAKE

Contrary to the review of last week’s double-episode premiere, I actually thought we got a pretty solid introduction to this take on these characters, especially as it was depicting a younger and less experienced Clark who was still breaking in his abilities and persona. A lot of how you feel about it is going to come down to how much you connect with the anime-esque aesthetic, courtesy of Studio Mir whose people worked on both Avatar series’, Voltron: Legendary Defender, and Big Fish & Begonia. It adds a lighter and cleaner tone that personally I find to be right at home for a Superman-focused property, but I can understand if it comes off a bit too sterile. Though what I think shined through in the premiere were the core tenants of the Superman character that people expect to be overlooked but I consider to be crucial: he’s an impossibly strong and potentially destructive guy, sure, but he ultimately wants to help everyone he can, even if they’re trying to kill him. And if they somehow make the Electric Blue powers from 90’s into a big part of the lore, hey, I say let them go nuts on that.

Likewise, I think the dynamic they are building between him and Lois is probably on its way to being up there with other, more iconic portrayals of their relationship. While Clark is well meaning and could beat down anyone around him if he wished, he often stays humble while having an optimistic attitude about people, while Lois is used to being cynical about others but takes charge and pushes forward for the sake of her own ideals, highlight best this week when her instincts tell her that this Super Guy is hiding something, even if he technically told her all true things. I’m pretty eager to see where that takes us as their friendship/affection for each other continues to build in increasingly adorable ways. Though if there’s anything I would note as lacking in the show thus far, it’s probably the bad guys. I don’t have a problem with changes to characters, especially considering these ones have gone through many over the decades (I’m sure Chris Parnell’s Slade will turn out fine), but this week just felt like they needed a threat to fill in and just scrounged together a few randos to give a nothing subplot. Here’s hoping that starts improving from here on, but I’m more than fine with this show taking its time to get its footing with this stuff
