Review: My Adventures With Superman “Adventures of a Normal Man”
Overview
Clark Kent builds his secret Superman identity and embraces his role as the hero of Metropolis, while sharing adventures and falling in love with Lois, a journalist, who also takes Jimmy Olsen under her wing.
Our Take
There are over a dozen adaptations of the iconic hero Superman in both live-action and animated presentations. Whether it’s the constant live-action TV adaptations that have shown up over the years on the CW or in theaters or even the numerous animation adaptations that have happened on both TV and in home release, we have a WEALTH of Superman and I’m not even talking about the comics or video games yet.
My Adventures With Superman doesn’t do a lot to offer up anything groundbreaking that anybody else has done before. Definitely produced for the kiddies that are up at midnight ET, My Adventures With Superman offers a bit more of an anime aesthetic not unlike most slice-of-life series you may have seen on Crunchyroll, most notably in the clearly Japanese-influenced character designs. Comic book die-hards will undoubtedly be upset about the race-bait switches of Jimmy Olsen (Ishmel Sahid) and Perry White (Darrell Brown) and whatever the fuck take this is on Slade Wilson in which Chris Parnell is horribly miscast as. Jack Quaid is a serviceable star for the show, but I’m spoiled by his prowess in Star Trek: Lower Decks so I’m expecting a lot more out of him in the coming season.
Largely, the character of Superman has been nerfed beyond belief. Already in the first two episodes we watch one of the infamous gods among us get bailed out from two big battles in which he is worked over by uninspiring villains (sentinels in the first episode?). The series is already very safe and tame for this hour, even more so that Unicorn: Warriors Eternal which at least had me more to chew on in terms of visuals, My Adventures With Superman doesn’t really do much of that here. If you’re looking for a more visceral take on animated Superman lore, I’d recommend the WBHE collection on Vudu.
"There are also other characters that come and go (also owned by the Warner Bros. Discovery conglomerate media company)."
Huh. Is that just referring to other characters from the show itself, or is this implying that the new season is going to have cameos from other WBD IPs
