English Dub Review: Urusei Yatsura “Magic Realm! Jungle of Terror / Pickled”

Pro tip: never hurt an octopus’ feelings and never give an oni pickled plums.

Our Take:

I keep waiting for this anime to get good and for the romance to be good but I might be waiting a while. Especially, when you have episodes like this one that just focus on the comedy. In fact, I think I’ve figured out my issue with this series. It’s classified as a rom-com but hardly ever focuses on the rom and more on the com. At least when it comes to my definition of romance anyways, what Ataru deals with is not what I would call romance. He’s just a skirt chaser and isn’t overly picky about the person wearing the skirt either.

We focus on Mendo and his obsession with octopi. He even has a whole climate-controlled area where he keeps exotic animals and manages to keep them in all their respective biomes. But when his Antarctopus finds itself in the jungle area that is when things start to go wrong.

It also seems like Lum and her kind get drunk off pickled things or maybe it’s the plums? Either way, a drunk Lum was definitely interesting. It seemed like the plot for the second half wasn’t really resolved and then the episode just ended. There are still entirely too many episodes left in this series…
