English Dub Review: My Unique Skill Makes Me OP Even at Level 1 “Kill All the Little Black Things”
Overview (Spoilers Below):
Ryota and Emily decide to try out the second level of the dungeon Nihonium for some new drops, but Emily has a problem with the monsters they find there…
Our Take:
Ryota has gained another fantastic item from a massive gorilla that doesn’t usually drop them. That’s how you know how OP this low-level player is. The item that Ryota received from the stray is not really an item at all. Instead, it’s a new weapon that gives him an upper hand in grinding: a gun with powerful bullets. So now, he’s a cowboy ready to shoot anything that gets in his way.
Additionally, we have Ryota and Emily exploring a new dungeon filled with cockroach slimes that drop green pumpkins. However, those enemies aren’t the only things Ryota is concerned about. It’s revealed that Emily has a dark side that unleashes whenever the cockroach slimes appear in front of her. It’s another scenario where a cute character like Emily hides a frightening persona. However, it compensates by showing Ryota freaking out over her craziness, which is admittedly hilarious to witness for me.
The episode also showcases more of its RPG world-building, which is enough to maintain my interest in its derivative narrative. It’s revealed that the monsters can spawn outside of dungeons when their dropped loot gets left behind. They can also disappear when kicked out of their dungeons, as shown by Ryota kicking the CGI skeleton enemy out of the dungeon, which dropped freezing bullets for him. These were further showcased at the end of the episode, with Ryota and Emily helping the travelers defeat a feminy, a ghostly monster spawned from the loot the travelers dropped off the cliff.
Additionally, it further displays the characters’ motives, mainly Ryota and Erza, that’ll likely play roles in future episodes. In Erza’s case, she has a crush on Ryota and wants to ask him out, but Ryota remains oblivious to her gesture. As for Ryota, his flashback to his previous life indicates that he felt guilty for not helping an employee with his paperwork. So Ryota vowed to get stronger to help others in need despite being at level one.
The third episode shows that the series has gotten more watchable as it progresses. However, that’s mainly because of its humor and character moments being amusing but also formulaic. How long until the amusement wears off would be the question worth seeking as our heroes become progressively stronger.
"There are also other characters that come and go (also owned by the Warner Bros. Discovery conglomerate media company)."
Huh. Is that just referring to other characters from the show itself, or is this implying that the new season is going to have cameos from other WBD IPs
