Review: Unicorn: Warriors Eternal “A Love’s Last Light”

OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)

The Evil leaves Merlin’s body and goes into the Cosmic Realm in Seng’s, pulling everyone else in too, where they meet an older version of the current Seng and learn the Evil plans to control and destroy everything. What seems to be the final battle begins, but the Evil amasses more power and separates Melinda from Emma, sending Emma back to her parents.

OUR TAKE

I am definitely getting the impression that at least an episode or two was cut because we seem to be doing some pretty big leaps towards the end. Last episode we were catching up with Winston and entering a magic jungle that may be populated with invading robots, and NOW we’re jumping into different dimension where Seng is an adult, a pet flying white lion, AND is working with the tiger guy from last week, creating a weird Goofy-Pluto situation. Is Rakshasa just a guy who was bitten by a tiger, like Winston was just bitten by a werewolf, or is he actually a tiger who learned to talk and walk on two legs? Of course, this isn’t really what I should be focusing on right now as we only have one episode left in the season, but it’s definitely what’s on my mind because that stuff needs an explanation. We’re right at the edge of the story and they’re still adding new elements or jumping into new aspects before covering others, and even when they manage to breather moments to let the characters relax for the moment, all I can notice is how I don’t understand who’s doing what or why.

What I think I SHOULD be focusing on is the fact that we learn (in the broadest sense) that the Evil plans to control everything and destroy existence or something, but first off, HOW does entering the Cosmic Realm help them accomplish this, why haven’t they been trying to do it this whole time, and (if this is really meant to have multiple seasons) how am I supposed to take this seriously when I already know it will never be able to accomplish this? We see a couple flashbacks from Edred’s perspective of how he met Melinda and Merlin and the first instance of them putting together the team to stop The Evil, but this mainly makes me wonder what their long term goal was with this project. Do they consider it “defeated” when it disappears and then just wait around for it to show up again? If we’re at this point where it may destroy everything, it looks like that plan wasn’t the most efficient. Anyway, one more episode to go, Emma and Melinda are finally separated, and I hate to admit that the only characters I relate to here are her bewildered parents. But points to Winston for being more accepting of her situation than Edred ever was, and I think that’s really going to help him out if he ends up joining the team.
