English Dub Review: Urusei Yatsura “Anko Pathos, The Taste of Love?! / Memories and a Close Call… / Adverse Effects”

Overview:

Lum and Ran are friends, but one can best describe their relationship as prickly.

Our Take:

So I guess just about everyone but Ran sucks in this one. Sure, Ran is kind of an asshole but after this episode, I can kind of understand why she’s the way she is. Lum constantly blamed her when she would pee in the bed. Not only that but Ran’s mother believed her and was so mean to her daughter. I understand instilling discipline and rules but maybe show a little more compassion for your kid. Normally, I don’t think there’s an excuse but when Ran said “You are the way my personality is like this!” I agreed.

I understand that misunderstandings are a staple of the rom-com genre but there comes a point when they just stop being believable. Ran hates Lum with a passion and now I can understand why but at the same time she has to see the signs that Lum just isn’t into Rei. For whatever reason she truly loves Ataru so the last thing she wants to do is go after who Ran loves. Still not a very good episode but it is surprising that another episode with Ataru barely featured and was actually decent.
