English Dub Review: My Clueless First Friend “Run! Shout! Field Day”

Overview:

It’s Field Day and it’s still unclear if Takada can run or not.

Our Take:

Field Day is upon the class and they’re putting their relay race team. Takada isn’t cleared yet, so the teacher selects Kitagawa to be the anchor in his place. Meanwhile, Nishimura manages to convince Kasahara to run for the girls. She really wants to do it herself, but she’s not fast enough and she wants the class to win.

The race is intense and sure enough, Takada is able to run. He even wins the whole thing, but not without Kasahara’s help. Kasahara actually seems to be getting friendlier with Takada and Nishimura, which is nice. I don’t know if they’re exactly friends yet, but this is a good start.

This is kind of a standard Field Day episode, but it’s still a lot of fun. We don’t get a lot of moments between Nishimura and Takada, but the ones we do get are nice. For example, Nishimura feeds Takada when he has trouble using chopsticks with his free hand. That’s a sweet little moment.

I really like what we see between Nishimura and Kasahara. It seems like Kasahara is starting to come around on the “Grim Reaper” and I’m happy about that. Plus, Kitagawa actually compliments Nishimura during an event. He goes back to teasing once Field Day is over, but it’s still progress.

This might not be the sweetest episode the show has to over or even the strongest, but it definitely has its place. It’s a fun watch and it offers a little bit of development. It’s a solid building block for a future friendship.
