Review: Unicorn :Warriors Eternal “The Past Within”

OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)

The Unicorns return to the city to face the giant octopus. Edred pushes Emma to give in and use her full power, only for her to be attacked and knocked out. While out, she dreams of Melinda’s past, revealing she is the daughter of Merlin and Morgan le Fey, the latter trying to take Melinda’s magic at a young age but being changed in the process. Emma eventually awakens and re-enters the fight, but Copernicus is wrecked by the monster, causing Emma to use her full power again to destroy it. Meanwhile, a shipwrecked Winston finds another ship, but the lone crewmember shoos him away. Determined, Winston returns only to find a werewolf, who bites him and causes him to transform.

OUR TAKE

Okay, we’re officially at the halfway point of the season, possibly the series, and I might be in the minority here, but the EXTRA CARTOONY STYLE is having an increasing impact on how seriously I can take the show, and in a way I have never had with any other serious tone Tartakovsky cartoon like Primal, Symbiotic Titan, or Samurai Jack. And I understand that the designs take influence from Tezuka, and Emma looking Betty Boop-ish might be intentional, but I am just not vibing with it. Looking at young Merlin’s mouth agape at the end of this was probably the most awkward face in the show yet. I’m sure other people aren’t having this issue but I just couldn’t overlook it anymore.

As for the episode itself, this is mainly about revealing things about Melinda’s past and hinting at what may be the bigger challenges down the line. Many, including myself, began assuming that this was showing that the mysterious fox lady was actually Morgan, what with the glowing green eyes, but thankfully Tartakovsky has clarified that she isn’t in yesterday’s Reddit AMA. There are plenty of things that we have left to uncover in the remaining five episodes, and I guess the true nature of the villain is one of them. We do at least know now that the Fox is tasked with suppressing Melinda’s power and is apparently failing, but what does that mean for Emma’s personality fighting with Melinda’s?

And lastly for this week, let’s give a pity shout out to Winston, who has kinda just been through way too much. Dude sees his fiance shot by a robot’s laser at his wedding that turns her into a spooky shadow lady, he gets injured in an attack her and her new associates are involved with, he follows them to the shipyard for answers only to get attacked by zombies and left to paddle himself home, and now he’s becoming a werewolf out in the middle of the ocean. He’s had a pretty rough go of it and it looks like it’s only going to get worse. Oh, and I wish I could have much of a reaction to Copernicus being damaged, but he hasn’t exactly been a huge part of the story so far past the opening, so I don’t know how I’m supposed to have much attachment. Maybe next week?
