Review: The Simpsons “Homer’s Adventures Through the Windshield Glass”

Overview

Time stands still after Homer crashes his car and flies through the windshield; as his life flashes before his eyes, a magical friend helps Homer learn the secret truth about his marriage.

Our Take

The Simpsons’ 750th episode opens up with a look back at the 750 various characters that have appeared on the series in the years’ past, regardless if they were killed off by the white actor purge of 2020, and right away I had hope that we were going to have a better episode than the debacle we had last week…fortunately, I am mostly right.

Featuring guest star appearances from the likes of Lizzo, Tim Robinson, and Bowen Yang, The Simpsons gives us an almost-cliched dream episode, but because its a near-death experience, I welcomed the more visceral premise. Sure, we got a few more tiny cliches like various glimpses into the future, but “Homer Goes To Hell” is as good as a pitch that I’ve heard in a while. I understand that we kind of got some of this in Treehouse of Horror IV with Ned in the role of Satan, and I must admit we didn’t get a revisit from that iconic character, but there were a ton of other background gags that had me laughing like nuts, not unlike an episode of Superjail! in terms of the variety and execution.

As for the guest appearances, all of them were pretty solid. Lizzo is still working out her acting chops, but I think she’s getting there. Tim Robinson possibly steals the entire episode in his brief contribution, and I am a card carrying member of Bowen Yang getting to take more shots downfield. Tim Long is a longtime solid writer for the franchise and is usually one of the producers that the show deploys when you have big-named guest stars (Tim also wrote episodes featuring Lady Gaga, Hugh Jackman, and Benedict Cumberbatch) and it shows.

We’ll go more into detail in the season 34 review, but The Simpsons has had a very up and down season, but I was happy to see that this week’s episode was the Listerine I needed to wash out my mouth after last week.
