English Dub Season Review: Peter Grill and the Philosopher’s Time Super Extra

Based on the Japanese fantasy/adventure manga series by Daisuke Hiyama. The 2nd season of Peter Grill continues the wacky and mostly unfaithful adventures of Peter Grill with his unwanted harem expanding and growing in small ways along with facing the challenges of keeping it hidden from those who’d harm…

On the Technical side, the series was animated by Wolfsbane and directed by Tatsumi, with Nora Mōri writing the scripts and Rui Ishige designing the characters. For the second season, titled Peter Grill and the Philosopher’s Time: Super Extra features the returning staff and cast, with Studio Seven involved as the secondary animation studio. The opening theme song, “A Promise Lingering Like Twilight”, was performed by Isekaijoucho, while the ending theme song, “Heart in Love” was performed by Hilcrhyme.

It’s of no surprise that Peter Grill is back with his sexual misadventures since Season 1 being the unapologetic fantasy adventure/sex comedy that it is, despite my apprehension for the show when it initially came out. And Season 2 follows up in the same regard being a continuation of the titular warrior’s claim to eventually win over Luvellia through her preposterous father being a sick joke, testing him in all ways to ensure that he gives up the marriage proposal with his daughter.

The value of this story is based on the moral dilemma of the protagonist in which he must select between what he must do, what he wants, and what he desires. For this second season, Peter Girlll looks more decided to do what he must do. But, simultaneously, the temptations will touch new levels, putting our protagonist into contrived and often complicated situations. And being perceived by many as the strongest warrior in a sea of women while being devoted to the love of his life, it was a journey of rough seas and lots of off-screen penetration and loss of virginities, and Peter Grill is the running gag of emotions broken every time a girl wants to get with him with (mostly without his permission) regardless of race.

There are no good characters in this story and how can they be all we really know about the characters is that they are horny. The show never really tries to make any character really appealing in any other way than their breast design. Any character’s story episodes are just failed attempts to get a giggle out of the audience. Upon research, uncensored versions of the episodes do exist showing full frontal nipples, However during this show’s original run in Japan, they tend to release the uncensored version of the same episode 6 hours after they premiere the standard censored episode, yet no word if they’d ever been released Dubbed in the mainstream market.

And I feel like I need to address the big elephant in the room regarding the nature of this show, but who the fuck is this even made for? I know this is a Harem Anime but it can get very uncomfortable at times with its subject matter of women sexually assaulting this dude. Whether people want to admit it or not, female-on-male sexual assault is an actual crime that “Woke” people on Twitter like to pretend doesn’t exist, and yet we frequently hear stories within the #Metoo movement regarding movie executives or female celebrities in Hollywood’s Industry doing despicable things like this regularly without consequence and for shows like this to treat it like a joke is all kinds of fucked up and should never be condoned or even encouraged regardless of gender.

Overall, while some of the jokes work, some fail miserably in terms of execution, especially with the topic of sexual assault on men as a whole. I don’t know what the endgame is here for this show, but it feels even more forced that Peter’s sister is incapable of being reasoned with at least 70% of the time since she often brags about allegedly killing their unfaithful father who we know very little about and raises the question on whether or not he was in a similar inescapable situation like Peter currently is. But whether or not Season 3 becomes a thing is up to its audience and whatever proper ending this could possibly have…
