English Dub Review: Bofuri: I Don’t Want to Get Hurt, So I’ll Max Out My Defense “Maxing Defense and the Big Final Battle”

Overview (Spoilers Below):

The third and final day of the eighth event brings the strongest monsters yet.  Maple Tree, Flame Emperors, and Order of the Holy Sword work together to fight off the final onslaught.  The goal is to make it to the end of the event alive…

Our Take:

The eighth event’s final day is finally upon us, meaning that another season of Bofuri is coming to a close.  Considering how much I’ve been enjoying my time with Maple and her guild, it’s bittersweet that we’ve already reached the end of season two.  Fortunately, the season finale knows how to end this latest event with a bang, similar to the show’s season one finale.

Instead of having them battle each other, the finale has the three guilds cooperating to survive against the event’s final group of monsters that appeared everywhere in the map.  However, the creatures resemble the armor-piercing monster (or “Fake Maple”) that Maple and the others fought in the previous episode.  This puts Maple at a disadvantage since her high defense couldn’t protect her from the monster’s attacks.  Luckily, she has her profound abilities and trustworthy teammates by her side to help her overcome these challenging opponents.

This then concludes with the guilds uniting against a giant winged creature threatening to destroy any player that gets in its way.  As expected, the episode delivered another thrilling showdown that displayed the characters through their power of teamwork and Maple’s optimism.  Additionally, the stakes in the finale were handled a bit better than the previous episodes regarding its close calls and the creature itself.  The best example is Maple and Sally, in which the latter gave Maple a hi-potion at the last minute so she can deliver the finishing blow, ending the event.

Regarding the positive messages and action, this “big final battle” is a satisfyingly charming and thrilling way to conclude the show’s successful second season.  But, of course, it isn’t without a few teases that’ll play a crucial part in a potential third season.  The game’s eighth level is approaching, so Maple and the others will have to find some time to spend their medals on some new skills.  More importantly, we have some new players joining the game, and they might be planning something big for Maple and Sally.  Unfortunately, we won’t know what that is until season three, which I hope will happen sooner rather than later.
