Disney+ Announces “Maggie Simpson In Not Quite Rogue One” For May The Fourth

Arguably I think the Star Wars franchise has been a lot more interesting than the Marvel franchise over the last year with efforts from Andor, The Mandalorian, Star Wars: The Bad Batch, and others and with one big Star Wars special coming on Thursday, it looks like the longest-running primetime animated series wants to jump in on the fray.

That’s because Disney+ has announced that a brand-new short inspired by The Simpsons featuring Maggie Simpson is set to premiere May 4th, known as Maggie Simpson In Not Quite Rogue One. While the short’s title is a bit more inspired by Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, the premise follows Maggie commandeering Grogu’s hovering pram and taking on TIE fighters, even bringing the fight to Springfield.

The short continues to showcase that The Simpsons franchise is very malleable. Whether doing short-form content, double-length episodes, or whatever, The Simpsons lasts because it can take on may forms. Hank Azaria recently said that he sees the franchise going to at LEAST season 40 despite the fact that his role has been largely sequestered due to the actor quitting voicing POC characters, including the Emmy-winning role of “Apu” of which he now claims is embarrassing.

That said, there’s no denying the staying power of The Simpsons. Ever the prognosticator, even used in a recent court case in attempting to help (it didn’t) the case of the parent company of the network that airs The Simpsons. In any event, this short kicks off a busy month for The Simpsons as the show wraps its 34th season later this month but is expected to kick off its 35th season later this year, both happening on FOX.

Synopsis:

The longest-running primetime scripted show in television history, THE SIMPSONS exploded into popular culture in 1989 and has remained one of the most groundbreaking and innovative entertainment franchises, recognizable throughout the world. HOMER (Dan Castellaneta), MARGE (Julie Kavner), BART (Nancy Cartwright), LISA (Yeardley Smith) and MAGGIE are instantly identifiable television icons. Rounding out this cast of characters are many beloved Springfield residents, including tavern proprietor MOE SZYSLAK (Hank Azaria) and nuclear power plant owner MR. BURNS (Harry Shearer). The Emmy Award-, Annie Award- and Peabody Award-winning animated comedy will begin its 34th season this year. In the premiere, Homer is desperate to prove he’s not dumb and sets out to solve the case of the tortoise missing from the zoo. Season 34 also will feature a double dose of “Treehouse of Horror” episodes, marking the first time in the show’s history there have been two “Treehouse”-branded episodes in a single Halloween. One of this fall’s two “Treehouse of Horror” episodes will be a full-length parody of “It,” with Krusty the Clown playing Pennywise, the evil clown character. Guest voice appearances this season include Simu Liu, Anna Faris, John Roberts as BOB’S BURGERS’ Linda Belcher, and Melissa McCarthy, who will play Homer’s rival for Grampa’s love.

THE SIMPSONS is a Gracie Films Production in association with 20th Television. James L. Brooks, Matt Groening, Al Jean and Matt Selman are the executive producers. The Gracie Films Worldwide Brand Division develops and produces the licensed content for the series.
