Review: Royal Crackers “Stebe”

Overview

When Theo’s old charismatic friend and former bandmate shows up unexpectedly at the Hornsby Manor, Stebe is thrown into a full-blown identity crisis.

Our Take

This week, we get to spend a lot more time with “Stebe”. Stebe is the rightful heir to the Royal crackers empire though from the sounds of the flashback, this was mostly by default. Theo was probably the one who was supposed to get the reigns to his dad’s old business, but Taint happened.

Speaking of Taint, we get to meet another former member of the band in the form of the Wes Borland-looking “Lars” voiced by Gareth Reynolds, and yes, that’s his name, clear inspiration from the Metallica drummer of the same name, the show continues to dig deep into nu-metal lore with a multitude of teases geared towards the popular nineties sub-genre. Whether its the “Silveria” Hospital (David Silveria is the former drummer of Korn), the “Twist” inspired vocal showdown that went down during the episode’s climax, and even how the metal sub culture shows up in unexpected places, Jason Ruiz and Co., have an undying obsession with the nu-metal fandom.

Fortunately, it pays off in hilarity. Wysol’s fingerprints on the script continue to showcase all over the show even in a script written by the show’s creator all-the-while Andrew Santino continues to cement himself as one of the funniest new voice actors of the year. The show has this fascinating inter-woven style where you think the show is going to be a pretty typical family comedy with characters that look like they could live next door to the Hill family in King of the Hill(to add credence to this, TBS has been airing episodes of Royal Crackers after new episodes of American Dad ), but have that Adult Swim genome injected into the veins of the pathos of the series.
