English Dub Season Review: Uncle From Another World Season One
Overview:
After a fatal encounter with a truck, Takafumi Takaoka’s uncle, Yousuke “Ojisan” Shibazaki, lies comatose for 17 years. When he finally regains consciousness, Uncle begins to ramble in a foreign tongue and reveals that he had been transported to a magical world called Gran Bahamal. Takafumi dismisses his uncle’s claims as nonsense until an incantation makes a cup of water hover in the air. In a flash of brilliance, the pair creates a YouTube channel to showcase Ojisan’s magical abilities.
Our Take:
As you all know I love Isekai anime, it’s one of my favorites. But I will admit that once you see one you can kind of get the gist of all of them. However, outside of a couple and the only one I can think of off the top of my head is The Vision of Escaflowne, none of them really show the main character coming back to our world.
Going to knock out some of the technical aspects first. As far as the animation it isn’t exactly great. It’s very reminiscent of The Way of the Househusband at times with the motion comic look. But then there are times it’s really good as well when it comes to the fight scenes and exaggerated facial expressions mostly.
The voice work could be hit or miss but luckily it was mostly hit. They went with a lot of new voice talent than sticking with major ones. The most recognizable names for me personally were Aleks Le playing the nephew Takafumi, Jenny Yokobori as Fujimiya, and Stephen Fu as Edgar. Aleks Le is one of the best VAs of this generation. His range is amazing, he can be serious and brooding but can also pull off silly and funny with no problem. His delivery of lines had me laughing multiple times.
I’ve never heard Feodor Chin in much of anything but some research shows that he does mostly video games. Feodor plays the titular Uncle and I have to say I’m a fan so far. I hope he gets more roles after this and with how Netflix likes to use people they’re familiar with I think it might come true. Victoria Grace and Yuzu Harada voiced Elf and Mabel Rayveil respectively. Victoria I know from her voicing Mei in Pacific Rim: The Black and I loved what she brought to the character. Yuzu I have never heard but her voice was cute and fit the character well. I would say when it came to the occasional misses it was these two characters that I noticed the most but I believe that’s because they’re still getting voice acting under their belt.
If you loved late 90s Sega then this anime has a lot of fun references for you. In fact, I think it’s safe to say that Uncle is obsessed with Sega. Constantly using video game strategies in the other world. This anime has a little bit of everything, action, and romance, but comedy rules the day in this. I have to say I found myself laughing a lot and I really enjoyed my time with Uncle from Another World. I don’t think we can expect a season two anytime soon but the manga is available in English and I think I might pick it up.
"There are also other characters that come and go (also owned by the Warner Bros. Discovery conglomerate media company)."
Huh. Is that just referring to other characters from the show itself, or is this implying that the new season is going to have cameos from other WBD IPs
