English Dub Season Review: Bluelock Season One

Overview:

The Japanese Football Union creates a program called “Bluelock” to find the world’s best striker.

Our Take:

Now this was some of the most fun I had watching anime in the last year. I’m usually pretty selective with sports anime because there is a lot out there and not all of it is good. But when you find a good one not only is it a good sports anime but usually one of the best anime in general. We’ve only got one season of Bluelock and it’s been greenlit for another season and even a movie. It has already become one of my favorite sports anime but my favorite still has to be Major.

The voice talent for this is fantastic but I have to give extra praise to Ricco Fajardo. Every character in this series is so over the top and can go from zero to a hundred in seconds that he really had to bring it. Trust me when I say that watching Isagi grow while hearing it in Ricco’s voice was fantastic.

8bit Studio handles the animation and they did a great job. Sometimes it can be hard to bring the action of a sport to life but they did great. Really my only issue was the CGI was occasionally pretty bad but it could have been worse.

With the nature of this series, the characters are going to be what carry it. It definitely succeeds in this regard because I felt like I was changing who my favorite was after almost every episode. I can almost guarantee that it will be the same for you as well.

Now that Haikyu!! has finished airing I think we are in need of the next big sports anime. Something tells me we have found it in Bluelock. What makes a great sports anime to me is that it can manage to make you love and care about a sport you used to have no interest in. Prior to this, I had next to no interest in soccer but because of this, I found myself watching the World Cup. This anime almost brought its story to life because the Japanese team wore similar outfits and got close to winning it all. Make sure you do yourself a favor and watch one of the best anime of 2022 and hopefully beyond.
