English Dub Review: Urusei Yatsura “To Kill With Love/ Studying Mayhem”

Overview:

An ominous omen. A pessimistic portent. A scary sign. Call it whatever you want, but one thing is clear: Fate will not be kind to Ataru today!

Our Take:

It seems like this anime’s method of storytelling is to just keep adding intrusive and annoying characters. At least now it’s not another love interest to swoon over Ataru for some reason. Now it’s another alien who was Lum’s previous fiance until she met Ataru. You’re probably thinking what I’m thinking and in some ways, you’d be right. I can’t say he’s worse than Ataru but his faults are at least tolerable and could see him in a functioning relationship. Rei is the new character in question and there is one very important reason why Lum should choose him. That reason is the fact that he at least wants her, I can’t think of one thing Ataru has that she likes. Their engagement is based on a sham which is similar to how Rei was introduced but we all know that won’t be the case.

I keep hoping that something will redeem this anime because it has to be popular for a reason right? They don’t just remake every anime out there so there has to be something of value here. I’m in it for the long haul since I’m reviewing but I’m left scratching my head wondering who this is for. Seems like I’m watching a time capsule that has aged poorly.
