English Dub Review: The Reincarnation Of The Strongest Exorcist In Another World “A New Journey”

Overview (Spoilers Below):
When the Empire attempts to execute Amyu, Seika unleashes his full power to save her.

Our Take:
The young exorcist has one more problem to deal with before the season is done, but it doesn’t involve any huge demons for him to fight. Instead, Seika is attempting a rescue mission to save Amyu from her imprisonment. As seen in the previous episode, Amyu was arrested by the Dirac Knights for killing a demon emissary. But as it turns out, the politicians imprisoned Amyu because they wanted the hero gone.
But, of course, there’s more to this reason than just a standard “innocent until proven guilty” trope. The season has focused on the usual “prophesy” element, with Amyu being the world’s chosen hero. However, the season finale showcases that this prophesy may not be as hopeful as we thought, at least from the enemies’ perspective. Grey and Fiona revealed that they planned Amyu’s death, as the hero’s existence could reignite the war between humans and demons. Additionally, the demons are only sent to destroy the hero to prevent the war from happening. However, since Amyu has yet to unlock her full capabilities due to Seika protecting her, Fiona suggests they return to the academy, but Seika has other plans.
“A New Journey” offers insight into Amyu’s purpose during Seika’s attempt to save her. But, it also teases us with the different direction the show will take in a potential season two. Instead of having the characters return to the academy, the episode shows them leaving the school behind to start their careers as adventurers. Of course, this choice was made to protect Amyu since she’s now a bigger target to their enemies. But, more importantly, it showcases that the series might be ditching the magic academy trope in favor of a fantasy adventuring arc for its second season, suggesting a change of pace for the series.
While it’s not a great way to end its middling first season, “A New Journey” marks a slight improvement over last week’s disappointing episode regarding its teases and Seika battling the imperial soldiers. Was it enough for me to check out its second season? Maybe, but only for my curiosity to see the new direction the series will be taking.
