English Dub Review: The Misfit of Demon King Academy “The Great Spirit Mother and the Demon King’s Right-hand Man”
Overview (Spoilers Below):
Anos and the others have infiltrated the Underground Dungeon. Before their duel against Avos Dilhevia, they use Time Magic, Revalon, to go back in time to Gairadite two thousand years ago to unravel the secret behind Misa’s birth, Shin Reglia, Anos’ right-hand man’s, intentions, and the reason behind the Great Spirit Leno’s death. What Anos saw in the world after he had passed was…
Our Take:
To answer the questions one seeks, one must dig deep into the past. That’s what Anos and the Demon King Academy gang set out to do to defeat Avos again in this week’s episode. Sadly, this will be the last time we see Anos Voldigoad for a while because COVID ruins everything. It’s a shame, too, since I’ve been enjoying what the second season offers, including its animation and characters.
We’ve seen several flashbacks depicting Anos’s life as the Demon King throughout the series, two thousand years before he joined the academy as a misfit. This episode has Anos and the crew finally visiting that specific timeline to defeat Avos and rescue Misa. This occurred after their encounter with some of Anos’s comrades, who are part of Avos’s search party looking for the misfit.
Their journey takes the crew back to when Anos is reincarnated after his death from Kanon. There, they must solve the mystery behind Misa, who was born two thousand years ago and has a connection with Shin, to save her from Avos’s control. But, before that, Anos must also know what caused Leno’s death, leading him and the crew to befriend her and Shin, the Spirit King who works as Leno’s bodyguard. Shin also wears a mask to conceal his demon identity while protecting Leno.
Even though their trip to the past won’t cause any changes in history, that doesn’t mean there aren’t any limitations that could test the gang’s skills. First, Anos has to conceal his scent to avoid attracting attention to himself. As a result, Anos takes the shape of a young boy, answering my long-burning question of who that child is in the opening sequence. They also can’t use their magical weapons in the past, meaning Lay can’t use his sword to defeat one of the divine hunting dogs, so he has to use Shin’s sword for now. We also learn more about Lina, now revealed as the love fairy Flan, a spirit seeking memories. However, Anos has to prevent Lina from remembering her actual purpose, or she’ll disappear.
“The Great Spirit Mother and the Demon King’s Right-hand Man” has an abrupt way of concluding the second season’s first half. However, it also provided enough interest in its teases to get me curious about the second half whenever that comes out. It looks like we’ll be spending at least a few more episodes in the past as Anos and the gang continue to search for the truths they seek.
"There are also other characters that come and go (also owned by the Warner Bros. Discovery conglomerate media company)."
Huh. Is that just referring to other characters from the show itself, or is this implying that the new season is going to have cameos from other WBD IPs
