English Dub Review: Bofuri: I Don’t Want to Get Hurt, So I’ll Max Out My Defense “Maxing Defense and New Teams”

Overview (Spoilers Below):
The second day of the eighth event begins with forced teleports that send players in all directions, a dark void that swallows up some parties’ bases, and the disabling of maps. On top of all this, those who survived the first night are left to fight either alone or with members of rival guilds.

Our Take:
The eighth event’s second day just got a whole lot tougher, especially for the Maple Tree guild. Aside from the profound monsters they’ll continue to face, the players are now forced to fight through the event individually. To make things even more challenging, they’ll have to do it without a map or any source of communication. But wait, there’s more. The players must also deal with a void consuming the entire area, including the bases. As stated by Mii, any player who gets caught outside the shrinking map is eliminated.
This is another episode that focuses on the Maple Tree members joining forces with the other guilds, resulting in its refreshing dynamics for the characters. In this case, we have Sally pairing up with Frederica from the Order of the Holy Sword guild, while Maple encounters Mii from Flame Emperor, who gives Maple a marker card so she can find her quickly. Additionally, we see Iz and Markus teaming up to defeat the monsters within the sandy dungeon and collect the remaining medals. Meanwhile, former rivals Kasumi and Shin unite to battle the worm monsters, and the former uses the Purple Phantom blade again, resulting in her becoming a child once more.
The three top guilds eventually unite to tackle another wave of stronger monsters using their skills and Maple Tree’s secret base. Despite the more difficult armored monsters, the three guilds prevail thanks to Mii and Payne, although they accidentally destroy Markus’s camera and traps during the process. But, of course, this causes more headaches for the administrators, who are worried that the top three guilds will make the event unfair for other players.
While it was fun seeing the Maple Tree guild joining forces to clear specific missions and defeat monsters, I also enjoy specific episodes involving the guild members cooperating with a different guild. It fleshes out the minor characters who aren’t part of Maple Tree and their skills, but it also provides some refreshing chemistries for the various pairings, with Sally and Frederica being an example. “New Teams” is another episode that offers that element with entertaining results despite the obstacles not being much of a threat to the characters. Unsurprisingly, the show will explore it further in next week’s episode, with everyone splitting up into different groups to retrieve more medals around the arena.
