English Dub Review: Urusei Yatsura “TROUBLE RAINS DOWN!! / AMAZED IN A MAZE”

Overview:

Two’s company. Three’s a crowd. And when a FOURTH party enters the Lum/Ataru/Shinobu situation? Things get pretty scary in Ataru’s already complex love life!

Our Take:

It looks like HiDive is suffering from what I like to call the “Crunchyroll Complex” and what I mean by that is that in this episode a lot of the on-screen Japanese wasn’t translated. At this point, I don’t know how a studio can dub an entire episode of an anime but yet miss translating on-screen text. A miss here or there isn’t a huge deal but as we’ve seen from some episodes it can really ruin some of these shows.

There are some parts in this that had me laughing out loud which is good since it’s a comedy show. Love triangles are hard enough to manage properly let alone quadrangles. Lum loves Ataru who loves Shinobu who currently has a thing for Mendo and HE has a thing for Lum. Confused? Don’t worry I think it’s going to get worse because the gang seemingly awakened another alien who’s female and something tells me she will be thrown into this mix as well.

It’s not that it’s a bad anime per se, and to be fair I should have known what I was getting into but I thought it was going to be a little bit better. The new animation is crisp and I love it, some of the characters are enjoyable but for some reason they like Ataru and he just doesn’t have too many redeemable traits at the moment. Hopefully, he gets some character growth as we go along.
