English Dub Review: Tomo-chan Is a Girl! “The Angel’s True Face”

Overview:

We see another side to Carol that we’ve never seen before.

Our Take:

I’ve been saying every week that I want more progression with Jun’s and Tomo’s relationship. We don’t get any in this episode, but that’s fine. After all, let’s not forget that there are other relationships that needed development. Instead, this episode focuses on the relationship between Carol and Kousuke Misaki. Carol is one of my favorite characters in the show and I have been curious about how her relationship with Kousuke would go, so I welcome this episode focusing entirely on that.

The episode takes a lot of unexpected twists and turns. Carol has always been unpredictable, but a couple other characters do things I wasn’t anticipating as well. This episode feels the most serious in nature so far. That’s not to say it’s devoid of comic relief because that’s definitely not the case. However, the tone of this episode feels different than normal and I think it’s a nice change of pace. I was starting to feel a little burned out with the show’s usual formula, so I’m glad to see it breaking away from that even if it’s just for an episode or two.

I love Carol’s personality so much. She’s always smiling and nonchalant, so it’s weird to see her without a smile on her face. Sure, it doesn’t last long, but it’s still a shock. We also see a little tension between her and Misuzu in this episode, as well as an interesting scene between her and Jun.

Of course, the primary focus is the relationship between Carol and Kousuke. I really enjoy the way it’s handled and ultimately resolved in this episode. It’s a little strange since the two are cousins, but the moments themselves are nice.

I wasn’t thinking about taking a break from the usual focus on Jun and Tomo, but I think it worked out great. It helps me recover from the slight burnout and it gives an episode focusing entirely on one of my favorite characters. Plus, we get to see a whole new side to Carol. Honestly, I doubt we’ll see it again, but I also didn’t think we’d see it in the first place. Whenever this show starts to lose its grip on me a little, it always finds a way to pull me back in. I love this episode and I’m very excited to see what’s next.
